Birgi: Where Past Meets Future in Sustainable Tourism

UNDP Türkiye Resident Representative | Monica Merino

A Journey Through History and Innovation

Nestled at the foothills of Bozdağ in Türkiye’s Aegean region, Birgi greets the morning wrapped in the quiet whispers of history. This charming village, a treasure trove of civilizations dating back thousands of years, carries the legacy of cultures as diverse as the Phrygians, Romans, and Aydınoğulları. Its ancient streets hum with stories of resilience and continuity, making Birgi a special destination for anyone seeking a connection to the past.

In 1996, Birgi took a bold step by becoming Türkiye’s first settlement to adopt a conservation zoning plan. This decision wasn’t just about preserving buildings—it was about safeguarding a way of life, a collective memory, and an enduring urban fabric. Today, as a proud member of UNESCO’s World Heritage Tentative List, Birgi stands as a living testament to harmony between heritage and progress. With more than 200 registered cultural assets, from the intricately carved pulpit of the Great Mosque to the picturesque bay windows of 18th-century mansions, the village silently promises, “Looking to the past can shape the future.”

But Birgi doesn’t only shine for its historical treasures. This little haven is also leading the charge against modern challenges like climate change, disaster risks, and tourism pressures. It’s not just about preserving what’s old—it’s about evolving responsibly. And that’s where the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) steps in, bringing years of experience in sustainable tourism to Birgi’s doorstep.

The visionary “SENTRUM: Sustainable Energy-Based Tourism Implementation Center” project, developed in partnership with Enerjisa Enerji, Türkiye’s Ministry of Culture and Tourism, and the Türkiye Tourism Promotion and Development Agency (TGA), has made Birgi its newest home. Following the successful launch in Ayvalık Küçükköy, SENTRUM began operations in Birgi in May 2025, ushering in an exciting new chapter for the village. This isn’t just conservation—it’s transformation.

The heart of this transformation lies with the people. When women redefine local production, youth champion the future of their village, and business owners bring new vitality to their services, conservation transcends physical preservation—it becomes a living, breathing social movement. And through inclusive decision-making, Birgi’s residents have become the true stewards of this sustainable tourism model.

Birgi’s journey reminds us that heritage isn’t just about honoring the past—it’s about embracing responsibility for the future. The SENTRUM project in Birgi offers a glimpse of what’s possible when communities unite around shared values. So, whether you’re drawn to Birgi’s ancient streets or intrigued by its innovative spirit, this village is a shining example of how history and modernity can walk hand in hand.
