Who is Global Sustainable Tourism Council?
The Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) is a worldwide initiative established in 2007 with the support of the United Nations Foundation, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), Rainforest Alliance, and UN Tourism (formerly the United Nations World Tourism Organization). Its goal is to define and promote universal principles of sustainable tourism. GSTC brings together stakeholders from the public sector, private industry, civil society, and academia to encourage sustainable tourism practices. Through its GSTC Criteria, it provides an internationally recognized sustainability framework for destinations, hotels, and tour operators.
Türkiye’s National Sustainable Tourism Program
In 2022, the Türkiye Tourism Promotion and Development Agency (TGA) launched the first government-level national sustainable tourism program based on the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) Criteria, in collaboration with the GSTC. This program aims to promote the adoption of sustainable practices across the tourism sector, starting with accommodation facilities.
  • Provides international accreditation for sustainable tourism certification bodies.
  • It is a structure that shapes sustainable development policies.
  • It is an independent and non-partisan, non-profit organization registered in the United States.
GSTC Criteria
  • The highest standard of sustainable tourism in the world.
  • Decades of work and experience around the world.
  • Applicable to all countries (small and large businesses and destinations/rural, urban and natural areas)
  • It takes into account numerous guidelines and standards for sustainable tourism from every continent.
GSTC

What is a
Sustainable Hotel Certificate?
  • Demand for sustainable practices is increasing.
  • As guests become increasingly concerned about the harmful effects of travel and tourism, certification offers a safe solution.
