Energy Saving Tips

Winter has come round at last. With the weather getting colder, our natural gas and electricity consumption is increasing. We consume more energy than we need even though we are not aware, and we face high invoice amounts as well as energy waste.

Energy saving is one of the keys to protecting our budget and contributing to the sustainability of our planet. By reducing unnecessary energy consumption and consuming energy more consciously, we can decrease our dependency on fossil fuels and minimize our impact on the environment.

So, what can we do for energy saving during winter months?
In this article, we compiled energy saving tips for you, enjoy reading.

What is Energy Saving?

Energy saving involves practices of reducing energy consumption and using energy more efficiently. This includes a series of actions taken to prevent unnecessary energy consumption, to use energy sources more efficiently and to reduce energy costs both on individual and corporate levels.

Energy saving is important for reducing consumption of energy sources such as electricity, natural gas, petroleum and being able to use these sources for longer. Moreover, energy saving contributes to environmental sustainability by helping to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, thus playing a significant role in the fight against climate change. There are various methods to gain energy savings, such as using energy efficient devices, improving insulation, developing habits of using energy efficiently, etc. Adopting technologies that provide energy efficiency and shaping our daily routines in line with this are important steps that can be taken to leave a more habitable world for the next generations.

Energy saving can be practiced in every area of our life, from our homes to our workplaces, and it provides significant reduction in energy costs. Therefore, gaining energy savings is not only an economic preference, but also a requirement of our environmental responsibility.

Things to do for Energy Saving at Home

1. Do not neglect central heating boiler and radiator maintenance.
Regular central heating boiler maintenance provides natural gas and electricity savings while also enabling the boiler to operate more efficiently and preventing dangers such as gas leaks.

2. Do not cover the front and the top of radiators.

Placing big furniture such as tables and couches in front of the radiators prevent heat from being distributed in the room. For maximum heat efficiency, do not cover the front and the top of radiators. Take fuel consumption under control by placing heat insulating plates behind the radiators.

3. Do not switch on and off the central heating boiler frequently.
Running the central heating boiler continuously in an economic setting provides savings. Switching it off during the hours you are not at home and switching it on when you come home leads to more fuel consumption.

4. Keep heat inside and cold outside.
Windows that leak air cause heat loss. To prevent this loss, you can insulate the windows using plastic window coatings and adhesive sponges. When single-glazed windows are renovated as double-glazed, they provide approximately 47% reduction in heat loss.

5. Use energy-efficient lighting.
You can gain savings by replacing old lamps with LED lamps which emit light more efficiently.

6. Unplug your electronic devices not in use.
More hours are spent at home on cold winter days and electronic devices are used more. In addition, electronic devices continue to consume energy even when they are not in use. Therefore, you can prevent energy wastage by unplugging electronic devices not in use such as laptops, computers, toasters, tea makers. etc.

7. Insulate your roof.
Heated air rises and searches for a point to leak to get out of the roof. You can insulate your roof in order to prevent this leakage.

8. Humidify the environment.
Humidity in the air helps the temperature to remain at an ideal level. With this purpose, you can put a cup of water on the radiators, or you can benefit from the water cups specifically produced for radiators that can be hung with hooks.

9. Limit the usage of domestic appliances.
One of the most significant methods of saving energy is to use domestic appliances, which are used frequently during the day, in an ideal way. Because 20% of domestic electricity consumption is due to domestic appliances. Take care of operating washing and dish machines at full capacity. You can consume 2.5 times less energy by using the stove to heat water instead of using a kettle. In addition, putting food in the fridge after they have cooled down provides savings.

Energy Saving Tips for Workplaces

You can gain savings on energy with conscious consumption not only at home, but also at the workplace. Energy saving methods for workplaces are quite effective in terms of reducing consumption. In order to raise awareness and prevent unnecessary energy consumption;

1. Use motion sensor lights in businesses where there is much people circulation. You can obtain energy saving up to 35% with day-light sensitive lightings.

2. Many electronic devices are used at workplaces from printers, air conditioners to copy machines, computers, heaters, coffee makers, etc. Energy consumption increases if these are plugged in when not in use and left on. You can ensure that the devices are unplugged when not in use.

3. Printing and copying are the most frequently encountered wastage sources in businesses. Printing and copying more than needed means unnecessary energy consumption. You can gain savings on energy by communicating in a digital environment.

4. You can also save energy by regularly maintaining electronic devices and heating systems at workplaces.

5. Using energy-saving LED lamps in offices contributes to minimizing consumption.
